How to choose a hands-free device

For business productivity and road safety it makes sense to install a handsfree car kit for any employee who is communicating while on the move.

Car kits are available at a number of price points and offer a wide range of features.

Why do I need a hands-free kit?

Hands-free car kits are the safer way to communicate.

In Australia it is illegal to use your mobile phone while driving unless you are using a hands-free option. The penalty is a $225 fine and three demerit points, more in a school zone or for P platers.

There are a wide range of hands-free options available in Australia. Choose a hands-free solution which will meet your business needs and keep our roads safe.

How do I choose the best hands-free car kit for me?

Deciding which car kit best meets your needs will depend on:

  • what type of mobile phone you carry
  • what type of motor vehicle you drive
  • what hands-free features you need to communicate safely

What type of mobile phone do you carry?

Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and Seimens all make Universal Car Kits. Most handsets will fit into Universal car kits. Therefore these can be a good choice long term especially if your handset may change or the vehicle may be used by different people. Some handsets will fit only one or two car kits made by the same supplier. You will need to choose a car kit into which your handset (and any other person's using the vehicle) will fit. If you are not sure whether your handset is compatible with a Universal Car Kit, check with VoicePlus.

What type of motor vehicle do you drive?

The type of motor vehicle you drive may influence the type of car kit installation you choose. A standard installation will require holes to be made in your vehicle's dashboard.

If you drive a luxury vehicle or a company car which is replaced regularly you may require a 'No Holes Bracket' fitting. This type of fitting leaves no obvious holes in the dash. The cradle into which the handset is placed while driving can usually be angled or manipulated to suit the driver in this type of fitting.

What hands-free features do I need?

Some of the features available with car kits include:

  • Radio mute: radio volume is turned off when phone rings
  • Ignition sense
  • Background Noise Screening
  • External microphone
  • Additional speakers or wired into vechicle's audio system
  • Phone cradle which recharges phone battery
  • Phone holder
  • Voice-activated dialling
  • Voice to text
  • External antenna
